A mural in 29 Palms
This coyote was looking for food. Normally, a night time job for these animals, they had learned that the people driving the roads feed them. Therefore they were out wandering the roads on a weekend day. My guess is that auto noises attract them. Be careful driving there.
A rancher around the beginning of the 1900's built a dam to catch the rainfall in a canyon on his property. The water in the dam was piped to this rustic watering trough for the cattle. Ranching in the area eventually became unprofitable, and the Park Service bought the property or so the story is told.
Murals like these are located on a number of buildings in the town of 29 Palms, California, one of the gateway towns to Joshua Tree National Park. This particular mural shows the natural well and pond, around which the town eventually grew. The pond depicted here is now part of the 29 Palms Hotel.
